INITIAL APPEARANCE
Presenting the Bird Lure as a forage
source is unlike other top water baits you may be familiar
with. One reason is the amount of wood comprised in the
head which sits about the water line. To counterbalance
this effect (and to add more rear weight for casting),
weight is inserted into the body between the first and
second trebles. You may notice on a cast that the bait
occasionally lands upside down. This is not a bad thing--in
fact it is very good. One little twitch will roll the
bird over as if it was in flight and for some reason has
dropped to the water and has righted itself under its
own power.
WHERE TO THROW THE BIRD
LURE
Bird Lures have preformed best in
locations where birds frequent such as covered boat docks,
under bridges, low lying branches, and thick vegetation
for their hidden insect populations. Laydowns in shallow
water have also been very deadly. Open water that is unrelated
to any structure has not been that productive but that
is not to say ineffective.
CASTING TECHNIQUES
With its wide body and bucktail
wings, the Bird Lure does occasionally catches air but
with a little practice you’ll be able to chuck it
as far as any other bait. However, distance is not always
the issue with this bait as with a crankbait or spinnerbait.
Rather short distances requiring pitching, flipping and
underhand casting have been the most successful.
ACTION
The Bird Lure’s body is almost
bowl shape which will allow as much as 180 degree turns
in some instances. The bucktail wings not only act as
enticers but also stabilizers to prevent side to side
rocking and turn overs. Gentle twitches of the line will
impart action into the wings and harder twitching will
create sporadic forward movement in the lure. A fast twitch/retrieve
looks like the bird is trying to gain speed to take flight,
a technique that has been highly efficient.
Nowhere in this description is
it claimed these techniques are the only methods of fishing
the Bird Lure. There are still some undiscovered techniques
out there-waiting for you to unlock them. Learning to
think like a fish and a bird is your ticket to finding
the key.
